Matty Thearle

Matty officially joined the team here at Ironart in July 2024 after completing an Artist Blacksmithing degree at Hereford College. Matty is no stranger to the Ironart team, attending forge-ins alongside our experienced blacksmiths since childhood and spending school holidays here in the workshop quietly observing everything that goes on, earning pocket money by sweeping the floor.

Matty’s keen interest in art at school lead to a Foundation Course in General Art and Design at Trowbridge College, where they found a passion for working with metal as a medium for 3D arts. Attending Hereford College to study blacksmithing was a natural progression – Matty is well known to set ambitious standards and push themself hard, with attention to fine detail. Their stand-out degree portfolio at Hereford ranged from highly decorated and colourful neck pieces to intricate yet practical crochet hooks and spoons.

Matty enjoys cycling, camping and generally heading outdoors. Matty is drawn to all things brightly coloured and rainbow and has a natural affinity with animals of all shapes and sizes, currently nurturing two orange house cats named ‘Lentil and Chutney’.
