The Ironart team were commissioned to refurbish these lovely traditionally-made gates at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital School in Clifton, Bristol. These heritage ironwork gates are probably late Victorian and were looking tired and had been damaged and neglected over years.
We removed the gates from site and put some temporary gates into the opening for security while we were working on them. The panels at the base of each gate had rotted out at the bottom. The lock box had also rusted out, some of the collar details were broken and missing, some of the bars had collapsed and decorative scrollwork details were bent out of shape.
Once all of the old layers of paint were removed the team could really appreciate the skill that had gone into making them. We got to work refurbishing the ironwork here in the workshop. The hinge fixings had failed and needed to be replaced. The gates had originally been made to fit within the arch and it was obvious that the hinging system had been modified at some stage to create a wider entrance.
The school has a blue colour scheme and we were given the paint colour reference for an exact match when repainting.
Onc re-installed the gates grace the entrance to the school in the high walls along Jacobs Wells Road, stop and take a moment to admire them if you are passing.
