Lower Lodge Gates at Ashton Court

The Ironart team were commissioned together with the main contractor Ken Biggs Ltd, to restore the Lower Lodge entrance gates to the Ashton Court Estate in Bristol. The gates, railings and lodge are all Grade II* listed and this prestigious restoration project was funded by a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

According to their heritage listing, this entrance lodge and it’s gates and railings were designed and built around c1805 by Henry Wood for Sir Hugh Smyth. They comprise of a limestone arch and gateway, flanked by two octagonal towers in the Tudor style.

The gates needed some attention but were of solid construction and had been reasonably well maintained, so were not too corroded. Our team carried out the bulk of the repairs to these gates in situ. We repaired some areas which had delaminated, renewed the lock boxes, restored the top rails and raked out the areas of corrosion. A glass screen was installed after we finished.

They look fantastic. The majority of the Ashton Court Estate is open to the public, so make sure you take a look next time you’re on the west side of Bristol.
