Partis College Gate Restoration

The Ironart team carried out repairs and refurbishment to a large set of gates which grace the entrance to Partis College a charity based on the Upper Bristol Road in Bath. Unfortunately the stone pillar and gates had been hit by a lorry and were in a very sad state with the stonework also shunted out of position.

The Ironart team have never seen a pair of gates like this in Bath, it is really quite an unusual design. They comprise decorative cast iron componant parts set within a wrought iron frame.

Because the gate details are made from cast iron, which is brittle and doesn’t bend under force, they had suffered quite a bit of damage. The bars were snapped and cracked, there was obvious damage to the forged framework itself which was knocked out of line.

The gates are extremely heavy and chunky, with a 50mm square backstile, thankfully Ellie and the rest of the team didn’t need to completely dismantle them to carry out the repairs, but took elements back to the Ironart workshop, where we carefully restored them and managed to piece everything back together.

Once restored the gates were finished in black paint with gold detailing. The stonework was also repaired and they look magnificent, take a look next time you’re passing through that part of Bath.
